In celebration of Patient Safety Awareness Week, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has launched a medication tracking tool specifically for the nation’s growing spanish-speaking population.
The brochure, titled “Su medicamento: Infórmese. Evite riesgo.” (“Your Medicine: Be Smart. Be Safe.”), aims to help spanish-speaking patients learn more about taking medication safely. The booklet includes a detachable, wallet-size card that can be personalized to keep track of medicines.
According to a Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General study, medication errors account for the largest group (31 percent) of preventable medical errors. Moreover, the same November 2010 report showed that more than half of adverse events that contributed to patient deaths were medication errors.
